Chapter 19
Maritz was behind his desk, a pencil held in fingers like sausages, tapping methodically on the surface, tap, tap, tap. The ever present Du Plessis was standing on one side against a wall. What Koos didn’t like was the smirk on Du Plessis’s face. Relax, he told himself, think like Phoxx.
‘Sit, Kruger,’ Maritz ordered.
Koos sat.
Maritz stared at him. Tap, tap, tap, went the pencil.
‘We’ve had information that someone took a report to Phoxx telling him we were about to turn traitor, Kruger. How would he get that?’ Du Plessis demanded.
Koos had to turn to look at Du Plessis.
Tap, tap, tap, went the pencil.
‘Well, all we sent him was the report you agreed to, sir, but I suppose there are a number of others who are dissatisfied and who might have sent this other report but may I ask where you got the report from?’
Du Plessis eased himself from the wall. ‘From Cape Town, Kruger, you’re not the only one who has contacts in high places.’
‘I never imagined I was, sir,’ Koos laughed. ‘But do you know for certain this report came from your contact?’ he asked, still smiling.
The taping stopped and, as Koos turned round, Maritz was sitting forward. ‘We’re not going to tell you who our source is, Kruger, if that’s what you think.’
‘It’s better that I don’t know, sir, then if Phoxx finds him, or her,’ Koos added as an afterthought, ‘I won’t be under suspicion for giving them away. The reason I’m asking is that it is just the kind of trick Phoxx would pull. He doesn’t trust one source and he’ll certainly have made arrangements to have what we reported checked in some way. The easiest would be to start a rumour that he’d had another, conflicting, report.’
Maritz glanced at Du Plessis. ‘It was from our normal source, sir,’ Du Plessis insisted.
Koos leaned forward and tapped the desk in emphasis. ‘Don’t underestimate Phoxx, sir. He may already know who your source is. He’ll have fed him information that is correct but not particularly important in the past so that you come to trust the source until he’s ready to play a trick, if you see what I mean, sir.’
Maritz was now frowning and Koos leaned back. ‘He’ll expect a reply, Phoxx, I mean. What I suggest is that we send him one telling him that we’ve found there is a mole in his organisation leaking reports to you with the intention of causing a split between the Afrikaners in the army. Even tell him he must expect a report that you’ve been talking to the Germans about military support.’
Maritz sat up and Du Plessis stepped forward to bend and lean on the desk, his hard gaze looking directly into Koos’s eyes. ‘Why would we send that?’ he demanded.
Koos didn’t wilt but sat forward again. ‘Phoxx is devious, sir. When I spoke to him, one of his main worries was that you might be in touch with the Germans. His other, and it’s a big worry, is that he’s being fed false information.
