Chapter Eleven
Jenny took my hand, jerked me off the ground, and we blinked to the trailer office. She dragged me up the front steps and in through the door. Standing in what would be the living room, she waved her hand and the room shifted to look just like my old trailer.
âWhat the hell?â I asked. âWhy are we here?â
âYou need a reminder of things,â she said.
âWhat kind of spell is this?â
âWould you shut up for five minutes?â
âExcuse me,â I muttered.
She inhaled deeply, then released the breath. âGrace, when you moved to Shady Grove you had nothing. Jeremiah moved you here after the break-up with Remy, which you now know was a much bigger mess since his ex-wife ended up with Tennyson for a time. Anyway. You immediately fell in love with a little baby girl and a dog. You opened your heart up to the possibility of loving something other than yourself.â
âWow! You make me sound like a great person.â
âYou werenât. You were a perfect fairy, but something happened here in Shady Grove. Your eyes were opened before you even realized how much you had overlooked in the days leading up to the moment you took the title of Queen of the Exiles.â
âHow did I miss all of it? I look back and think of how stupid I was not to notice.â
âYou didnât want to see past your own problems other than with Winnie, of course.â
âAnd thanks to Dylan and his persistence, I opened my eyes to see what was there.â
âWe wouldnât be having a wedding today without him. I know this isnât the way you saw everything happening, but you are damn blessed. Levi Rearden will love you no matter how much you torture him until the day both of you cease living on this earth.â
âHeâs a love talker,â I said.
âAnd? So is Tennyson. I know what he went through for us to finally be together. He had other women and I had other men, but I can tell you that no one fulfills me like that man. Could you imagine your life going forward without him?â
âNo, of course not, but this isnât how I saw it happening. I want Levi. I just donât want this hullabaloo.â I raised my hands and stomped my foot for emphasis. Her glamour on the room faded.
âIs he not worth it?â she asked. âAnd you look ridiculous stomping your foot like a child. Very queenlike.â
âWhen did you decide that you would take over this motherly role in my life?â I exclaimed.
âYouâve never had a mother,â she said.
âAnd, I donât need one!â
âApparently, you do, acting this way. Grace, itâs time you put on your big girl panties and be the queen we all know you are inside. No more of this headstrong nonsense,â she scolded.
âHeadstrong is what has kept me alive despite losing Cohen, losing Dylan, and having all of this hidden from me for my entire life. How dare you!â
âI just donât want to see you making the same mistakes that I did!â
She had been a queen, and she did manage to muck that up.
