A RISING TRAFFICKER OFFERED CACHOTE and Blondie jobs as bodyguards. Alex’s name was ricocheting through the underworld as someone smart, ferocious, and more sophisticated than the average narco.
Now Cachote is making more money than ever. But like everyone in cocaine, he never saves—why bother? Someone will always need killing and no one is retiring out of this. Cachote knows reaching thirty is an ambitious goal.
The blood money goes quickly in the nightclubs of Medellin. Nights stretch into three-day benders of cocaine, the hallucinogenic drug 2C-B, and whiskey. Party today, die tomorrow. The nihilism of cocaine. Cachote parties and loves as much as life will give him before the inevitable end, an end almost certain to come via another sicario’s bullet.
“I like the parties to distract me from all I did. But other times I like to be alone, so I can think on what’s happened. Analyze it and get over it: I killed him, now is time to move on with my life. I calm down, I go shopping.” No one is more materialistic than those of the underworld.
Cachote is bisexual, partying along Medellin’s “Street of Sin.” The city’s small gay scene crams into a handful of clubs. Sicarios dance and leave with lawyers, doctors, men whose lives would never intersect save on a gay dance floor, a court trial, or a hospital emergency room.
Cachote’s sexuality is a secret in the underworld. His boss, Alex, knows and doesn’t care. But he’s ordered him to keep it quiet—he’s not going to be mocked or tested by other traffickers for having a bisexual bodyguard. Cocaine doesn’t really care about race or sexuality. Medellin does. It’s a conservative city, with the spirit of the shopkeeper, the religion of the devout.
Cachote tells me a story: This drug lord fell in love with a handsome young sicario. The sicario was hetero and popular with women. Jealous, the trafficker ordered the killing of the sicario’s girlfriend. When the sicario found a new girlfriend, he had her killed, too. The sicario went through five girlfriends in a year. He couldn’t understand why his girlfriends kept dying of bullets. Convinced he was cursed, the sicario found his only relief by putting a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger.
“And the trafficker found a new man to obsess over.”
Cachote finishes the story and looks at me like only an idiot wouldn’t understand the moral of the tale.
