Chapter 36

The phone battery clicked into place. I was sitting in the downstairs bathroom, putting the thing back together so I could text the number Hudson and Nez gave me. I wasn’t sure whose number it was, but I guess it didn’t really matter.

I had thought about waiting until everyone went to bed—Cotter had already told me I could sleep in the house tonight—before calling the number. But that was just too risky. Someone could hear me talking, and that wouldn’t be good. I wasn’t supposed to have a phone, after all. Sneaking outside wasn’t an option either. If I got caught, I would have to come up with some explanation. And I couldn’t think of one that would be legit enough to avoid suspicion.

So I was in the bathroom. The phone was powering up. I waited, tapping my foot up and down in anticipation.

After dinner, I had tried to gently pry some specifics out of the four other men at the table with me. I didn’t want to seem too eager, but I was also wary of seeming too disinterested. After all, I was supposed to be down for the cause. So I paid attention to the level of excitement projected by Cotter and Halverson, then toned it down a bit and gave it back.

But it was all to no avail. They said the time would come when they could tell me more, but it wasn’t yet.

“We don’t even know all the specifics yet,” Cotter had said. “It’s safer that way.”

I had to hope that the information I did have was enough to get the ball rolling.

The phone finished booting up and I unlocked it, immediately tapping on the message app. I drafted a long message:

It’s happening Saturday. Not sure of specifics. Won’t tell me.

Found some info though:

Names: Coakley, located elsewhere. Cotter, Halverson, McCray, and Pete, all located here at Mt Shasta.

Possible Usernames: E-TurnEr, WLPierce$, and AndyM@c

Found this on a separate page in a notebook:

Key: EugenFischer.org

1, 3, 5, 7

Nearly 100 people here. No children, few women. Lots of new recruits. Military training basics. AR-15s and fatigues.

Will check message when I can.

I read it once over before hitting send. I knew that telling them about the thing with Stoll wasn’t a good idea. I didn’t know how they’d react to that. And I sure as hell didn’t want them getting all weird on me, trying to pull me out. So I left it out.

I’d already been in the bathroom too long, so I shut the phone off and then shoved it down my pants into my boxer briefs. I figured it would be safe there until I could use the bathroom again in a couple of hours to see what the response was.

After flushing the toilet and washing my hands, I came out of the bathroom and found McCray watching the news in the sitting room. “Anything you want me doing right now?” I asked him.

“Get some rest. The next week is gonna be busy as shit,” he said without looking up.
