Tips to Curve Cravings
Everyone experiences cravings at times, and sometimes they are so strong that it feels impossible to resist. Common cravings to experience are those for sugars, carbohydrates, and grease, most of which are exactly what is restricted on a keto diet.
While an occasional slip-up is not a big deal for most people, these can be one of the biggest hurdles to succeeding on the keto diet.
For this reason, it is important to learn and utilize some simple tricks that will help curve those cravings, keeping the body satisfied without backtracking or ruining any progress made. Some simple, yet effective tricks include:
Drink enough water. Most people understand that water is essential for all bodies, but many may not understand how big of a role it can play in curving cravings. First of all, drinking enough water daily keeps the body hydrated, which can curve cravings for other liquids. It also keeps the stomach feeling full, which helps prevent overeating and can lengthen the time between meals. And lastly, providing the body enough water keeps it from feeling deprived and storing water, meaning that it actually helps to reduce bloating and water weight that can add false pounds and can be discouraging for anyone trying to lose weight.
Distract yourself. Cravings are often only as strong as the attention they are given, meaning they lose a lot of power as soon as the focus is taken off them and put somewhere else. If a strong craving hits, try busying the mind with something else such as talking to someone or going outside. Most cravings only last around 20 minutes, and a good enough distraction may cause the craving to be forgotten even faster than that.
Get enough exercise and sleep. These are not only healthy lifestyle changes, but are also directly linked to curving cravings. By getting enough sleep and exercise, the body produces less of the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin, making it easier for you to stay on track.
Eat something else. When craving something that isn’t on the list of keto-friendly foods, it could help to eat something else that is acceptable. Eating anything during a craving not only satisfies the desire of going through the physical motions of eating, but also presents the taste buds with a different flavor that can help distract from the original craving. This will also help fill the stomach, which can curve a craving in itself.
Don’t keep foods you can’t eat in the house. Taking away easy access to off-limits foods is one of the most effective ways not to cave during a strong craving. This is a common tip for most diets, yet can be a little difficult for teenagers to adhere to if they are the only ones in their family who follow a keto diet. However, there are still little things that can easily be done that will make a world of difference. Be sure that the rest of the family understands the restrictions of the keto diet to avoid unnecessary temptations by others.
