Long Term Side Effects
A study titled “Metabolic Effects of the Very Low Carbohydrate Diets: Misunderstood Villains of Human Metabolism” shows that for short- term purposes, the Ketogenic Diet is very effective. It lets you burn all those excess fat quickly but in a healthy way. If you do this for a long period of time, however, there will be side effects. For example, there can be muscle loss, dizziness, kidney problems, acidosis, and problems with focus. Does that mean you shouldn’t go on a Ketogenic Diet at all? Of course not! This only means that you’ll have to be careful when using this diet. Don’t push it too hard and you will be able to get all the positive results with none of the downsides!
Do you know why a low carbohydrate diet is bad if done for a long time? Well, balance is important in anything you do, and the Ketogenic Diet doesn’t really support balance. If you get rid of an entire food group for a long period of time, your body will rebel against you. Remember – the Ketogenic Diet relies on stored fat in your body. If there are no more stored fat, it really won’t work anymore so you will have to increase your carbohydrates. To solve this problem, I recommend going on a 30-day Ketogenic Diet first and assessing your health before moving forward. Asking your doctor what to do “next” after the 30-day plan or after hitting your weight goal is also a good idea. Personally, I decided to increase my carbohydrate intake slightly after hitting my goal weight.
