Chapter 10
Mandy couldn’t believe she ever thought Tina had an ounce of retreat in her, and not simply because of her performance at the bar. Given the pressures in her life, Tina was overdue for a meltdown.
The first evidence of backbone came over breakfast. Just a simple apology, then “you want more eggs?” Tina said over breakfast that she was the first in her family that she knew of to finish college, which she probably said to put Mandy at ease. Mandy didn’t need the advisory. She saw that away from the library, Tina had a more casual attitude.
After the eggs, a perfect over-easy, Tina took her home, where Mandy changed into shorts. Almost without discussion, they decided to spend the afternoon together.
Now they were sitting in Tina’s car, Sonic drinks in hand, gazing at the one truly scenic spot in the county.
To get there, one started with a twelve-mile drive down a tarmac farm-to-market road south of town, then two miles farther on a dirt road. Travelers came up over a sizeable hill, itself a novelty, then the road dipped sharply next to Chaco Draw, which had been a going stream when the earliest non-Natives first came through in the late 1890s.
Long since turned into tangled brush, it showed signs of its former life along about September in a wet spell, allowing visitors to walk along the banks and pretend to see a raging torrent in the spare rivulets. About half a mile farther a rogue outlier of the Caprock rose, pushing jagged rocks from a plateau start-up that God halfheartedly began, then abandoned.
Tina struck her as lacking in pioneer, not to mention hiking, spirit, so Mandy decided not to suggest they leave the car. Instead, they sat there with the windows rolled down and talked about people in town, the bar from last night, and other women.
“I guess I should leave her.” Tina spoke tentatively.
“You were never with Syd in the first place.”
From the way Tina reacted, Mandy realized she’d overstepped a boundary. She might as well keep going. “If she were a man, would you still say you’ve made any kind of commitment, that you’re involved with each other?”
“In a way. I guess.”
A high, thin crease formed on Tina’s forehead as she pondered the concept. Mandy thought those few age lines on her face were interesting. Sherron would spend time covering it with makeup, but Tina didn’t seem to care. Her lack of concern may have come from expecting an early death.
The crease disappeared. “No. If she was a man and I was straight, I wouldn’t have called her back after that night. Oh. I assume I told you about how she took charge, how I didn’t get to do… that.”
“The subject came up.”
Yeah, it had come up a few times, mixed in with speculation about Cat Acuff. Mandy had to admit the hairdresser’s wife sounded gay, according to the otherwise unreliable Dani. Also during the drive, Tina frequently voiced her fears about going insane. Mandy couldn’t
