Chapter Twelve
I didn't get the phone call until almost closing time on Sunday. If we hadn't had such a busy day, I don't know how I
would have made it through those hours without losing my mind.
"Oh my god, Grayson! What the hell happened?"
"Nothing good. I've been fingered by the mob, see? Some slimebag canary sang. Yeah, that's what happened."
He said this in the absolute worst imitation of a gangster I could imagine. As horrible as the situation was, I couldn't
help but laugh. He laughed with me.
"I was really worried. Your brother said . . ." He cut me off.
"I knew you'd be worried, but there was nothing I could do except ask someone to call you for me. They take
that one phone call thing pretty seriously for a Podunk police department."
"It was a relief. Thanks for thinking of me."
"Trust me," he started again in his silly mobster accent, "ain't nothin' in the world makes a guy think about
his dame more than doin' time in the slammer."
"Ha ha. So, what happened?"
"Can we talk about it over dinner? I'm famished. Bread and water doesn't cut it."
"Where do you want to eat?"
"Given the choices, I guess McQueen's will have to do."
"You won't get a moment's peace in there," I told him. "If you give me an hour, I'll throw some pasta
together."
"I'll bring wine. Lots of wine."
I banged out a kick-ass putanesca sauce for some penne, threw a frozen garlic loaf in the oven and tossed a
green salad. It wasn't gourmet, but it was filling and homey and a cut above opening a jar.
My half of the duplex was almost comically Spartan. Crissa had had a little more time than I had to hang a
few pictures and acquire at least some sense of being decorated. I had a little dinette and enough dishes for a lavish
two course dinner for four people if one of them didn't mind a cracked plate. As it was just going to be the two of us,
I could offer matching wine glasses.
My couch was something Leon had in his garage. Enough said. I had covered the tatty upholstery with a
spread and had a couple of plastic grocery totes upended for a cocktail table. I had a very nice bed that my parents
had bought me as a bon voyage present. Crissa had hauled it down in a truck with her stuff and the measly
possessions I wasn't going to be able to fit in my car on the drive down from Chicago. I hadn't gotten around to
banging the metal frame together so the box spring was sitting on the bare floor.
One corner of my bedroom had a few unpacked boxes in it. I was in the market for a dresser, so most of my
summer things just had to wait in their cartons. I fussed around with the bed a little, arranging the pillows and
smoothing the few wrinkles in my nice new comforter. I hated having Grayson see how simply I lived. The nice new
bed with all the pretty pillows fancy sheets made up for the rest, a little.
