46. MARILYN MONROE TELLS HER MAID WHAT SHE REALLY THINKS OF KHRUSHCHEV

When the chairman left the room, reporters swarmed around the stars, fishing for quotes about the historic event and the illustrious guest.

“I wouldn’t have missed it for anything,” said Elizabeth Taylor. “He’s great. I hope it makes for better understanding.”

“He seems to have a very agile mind,” said Eddie Fisher, “and he can ad-lib with the best of them.”

“His speech was interesting,” said Kirk Douglas. “Having been a fighter, I know it’s smart not to get hit in the clinches. Mr. K never gets hit in the clinches.”

“This Khrushchev’s an egghead,” said director George Stevens. “He tried to hide his intellectual brilliance but he cannot quite do it.”

“This guy can really think on his feet,” said Charlton Heston. “Ad-libbing with him is like trying to trade gags with Milton Berle.”

Shelley Winters said she wasn’t impressed with the Khrushchev-Skouras debate: “It sounded like two kids arguing, ‘My old man is better than your old man.’”

Bob Hope said he enjoyed lunching with Nina Khrushchev. “She was charming, very sincere, and very sweet,” he said. “She seemed very interested in all the people at the luncheon, even though she didn’t know who we were.”

“She swings pretty good English, too,” added Sinatra. “Seriously, she is a darling, charming woman.”

“This is about the biggest day in the history of the movie business,” said Marilyn Monroe.

Later, when she got back home, Marilyn told her maid what she really thought of Khrushchev. “He was fat and ugly and had warts on his face and he growled,” she said. “Who would want to be a Communist with a president like that?”

But, she added, he certainly seemed to enjoy meeting her: “I could tell Khrushchev liked me. He smiled more when he was introduced to me than for anybody else at the whole banquet. And everybody else was there. He squeezed my hand so long and so hard that I thought he would break it. I guess it was better than having to kiss him.”
