When we turn off the camera, Regina, Bowles and I smoke kif together. It’s a bright, subtle high, not heavy like the Mexican grass I’m used to. We smile a bit; we don’t say much. Later on, we film one of his good-looking Moroccan assistants preparing kif in the living room, rubbing the plant through a fine screen to get a golden pollen-like powder, which has a higher level of THC than ordinary weed.

To distinguish it from the myriad other Paul Bowles documentaries, we start saying ours is the “sex and drugs Paul Bowles film,” because we also address his homosexuality, although not with our subject, who is so old-school we dare not broach the issue for fear of inducing an on-screen heart attack.

The film takes years to finish, but ends up doing well, with a New York opening at the Museum of Modern Art, a theatrical run of 20 cities, distribution on the Sundance Channel and wonderful reviews. This has little to do with our stoned brainstorming and a lot to do with Bowles, a legendary writer with an inimitable mystique, and our crew, especially a masterful cinematographer and a brilliant film editor.

Just before we leave Tangier, while I’m still upset about the Japanese crew, I go to a small shop to buy one of those round brass trays that dangle by three chains connected by a ring so you can carry three cups of coffee suspended by your finger. The store doesn’t have the tray I want. The shop owner asks if I need any batteries, special Moroccan batteries. I’m puzzled. “Come back here, I’ll show you,” he says. I’m not aware that batteries vary from country to country. He takes me to the inner room, opens a drawer, and I see a large chunk of hash. “Do you need this?” he asks. “Or a smaller piece?”
