When AJ awoke, he found Jayne staring at his face, otherwise unmoving.
"Morning," he said quietly, shielding his bad breath from her.
"Darnell is already up," she said. "Tonka has breakfast for us. You won't like it. The menu is completely vegetarian, but you're not going to complain."
He grinned. "How did you sleep?" She strained forward and kissed him lightly on the forehead. He looked at her incredulously. "What was that for?"
"For being you," she said. "I slept about as well as a woman who has a damaged orbital socket can, but I felt safe."
"I wish you hadn't taken that Korgul antidote," AJ said. "I wish BB or one of her friends could help you."
"AJ, we know why we're here. I should have taken more precautions with Pankee. It was hubris that made me think he would react like a human. While I'm not sure I wouldn't have protected that fallen Xandarj, I also don't know much about their physiology. I put us at risk last night. I'll be fine after a few weeks. Pain is a tremendous instructor."
"Are we okay? You've been kind of distant lately."
Her smile was small. "We've both got a lifetime of baggage, AJ. Some days I want to run into your arms and have you hold me until I can't breathe."
"And the other days?"
She chuckled ironically. "I just want to be an old war buddy."
"Not likely."
"What's that supposed to mean?" she asked, irritated. "I didn't serve in the right way to be one of your buddies?"
"Whoa, hold on there, Doc. That's not it at all. Well, it is, but not like you think."
"Inform me."
"I never thought about any of my buddies from 'Nam like I do you."
"It's like that, is it?"
"What am I saying wrong? I'm trying to pay you a compliment and you're getting all huffy."
"Could you be any more dense?" she asked and climbed down from the bed.
"Probably," AJ called after her as she slammed the door behind her.
Beverly chose that moment to appear. She wore a sparkling silver spacesuit with rocket packs strapped to her back and a transparent fishbowl-styled helmet over her head. "Have you ever watched the Jetsons? I can't believe I haven't found those videos before now."
"Go away, BB," he growled as he climbed out of bed and lowered himself to the ground. He could still feel the injuries caused by the previous night's fight, but the soreness was significantly better than when he'd gone to sleep.
"Big day ahead," she said. "Darnell has been talking with Tork about going down to the Trailer, which is where Fairs works. She has a trading stand. Apparently, she's kind of a big deal."
"What are we trading?" AJ asked, opening the door Jayne had slammed. "And do you know why Jayne is pissed at me?"
"I do," Beverly said. "I believe it is best if you discover it for yourself, though."
"You girls form a club or something?"
"Something like that."
"Ah, Agee, you are awake," Tork said as AJ entered the room where they'd sat and talked the evening before.
