Samantha was surrounded by a group of gushing women —the wives and girlfriends of the mostly male executives from B.G.I. She was doing her best to entertain them, but she was on edge, waiting for Julia.
They had exchanged a glance in the hotel lobby that afternoon when they arrived, and the obvious passion in Julia’s expression made Samantha tingle. Then Julia had gone upstairs to her room.
She was worried Julia was hurt about last night, or angry. She knew she should just leave things alone, but her desire was in constant battle with her common sense.
Suddenly, the door opened and Samantha froze in mid-sentence as she watched Julia enter the room. She was stunning. Lisa came in behind her, and with her hand at Julia’s back, she introduced her to a B.G.I. executive. With a toss of her chestnut hair, Julia gave a charming smile and shook the guy’s hand. Samantha was shaken for a moment by the memory of that soft, perfumed hair against her face—that one heavenly time when she allowed herself to hold Julia in her arms. It seemed like a lifetime ago. The man left, and Lisa moved close to Julia, whispering something to her. Samantha couldn’t stand it.
She turned back to the women before her. “I’m sorry. You’ll have to excuse me for a moment.”
She quickly crossed the room toward Julia, as Lisa, thankfully, left her side. Samantha was tongue-tied, mesmerized by the sight of her. Julia seemed composed, exhibiting a self-assurance that was unnerving. She wasn’t saying anything, and Samantha felt totally off-balance. Her heart began to pound, and in an attempt to save herself, she broke eye contact, only to find herself staring at Julia’s exposed cleavage, which didn’t help. Samantha swallowed hard, then looked directly into Julia’s glowing, emerald eyes. “You’re not angry with me, are you?”
Julia gave her hair a sexy little toss. “No. Not angry.” Her voice sounded husky, breathless.
All Samantha could think of was taking Julia into her arms, right there, and kissing her. The rest of the room was a blur.
“Hi, Samantha,” said Lisa, making Samantha jump. Lisa placed her hand on Julia’s back again and began to steer her away. “They’re serving dinner. I think we should go and sit down now.”
Samantha stood there impotently, as Julia, with one parting, seductive glance, allowed herself to be led away.
“Over here, Sam,” Ruby called, indicating a seat beside her.
Beautifully presented platters were being placed on the table. There were lobsters, prawns, oysters, salads, hot chili mud-crabs and spicy noodle dishes. Waiters were bustling around filling wine glasses. Samantha sat down but kept glancing at Julia at the opposite end of the table.
Julia was smiling and chatting, looking gorgeous. She had those business executives eating out of her hand. Lisa had her arm draped over the back of Julia’s chair and was leaning close to her.
Samantha felt a huge pang of jealousy and she quietly muttered to Ruby, “Will you take a look at Lisa, for Christ’s sake? She’s all over Julia—it’s pathetic.
