Chapter Eight
It is a strange phenomenon and attributable to some peculiarities in certain sections of the human race that any movements in the heavens of tiny spots of light from vast distances away, or in fact any information from above, are regarded as a sign of the times and usually some kind of prophecy. Indeed, new astrological forecasts were prepared by purveyors of this craft and had become so common due to this exciting interruption to their regular reporting about the alignment of the planets or some other kind of pattern which would determine how one should live one’s everyday life, that they were greeted with great foreboding. Wise observers commented that such dramatic movements in the heavens always, without exception, portended some majestic dire event and never amounted to positive prophesies, save for the guiding star seen by the wise men of the Bible.
Even with the looming asteroid Judgement, the notion of punishment for wrong was strong in the human psyche, and it was considered that there must be some supernatural hand behind it all that would give humanity what it surely must richly deserve. In addition to the astrological portents, group thinking arose in some quarters whereby those people who liked that sort of thing saw the asteroid as clearly a function of intelligent life come to destroy Earth and then colonise it and strip it of its minerals, for such had been the topic of movies for many years.
It was pointless for scientists to try to argue with such people because it was thought ludicrous that one could argue with so called intelligent humans who took such a bizarre view of things. Nevertheless, this is what happened and in a short period of months since Judgement was discovered some commentators guessed that ten million people were certain that the asteroid would stop suddenly and go into Earth’s orbit, after which extra-terrestrials would be sent down to converse with the world's governments.
Many of these people yearned for this to happen and psychoanalysts considered that this odd point of view was due to them being bored with their own lives so that they saw this phenomenon as a way out and a vindication of their bizarre beliefs. There were those who still denied that man had been to the Moon at all and as a result there was a hotchpotch of ideas that arose and commingled in a strange way, which said more about human nature than science ever could.
In parallel with this were pictures released by NASA taken from the roving machinery on Mars which travelled around the rocky surface of that orb. These were studied with great interest, with viewers seeing what they wanted to see, which was of pictures of apparently intelligent-made objects which they deemed to be irrefutable evidence that aliens had already been to the Red Planet as a precursor to a trip to Earth. It was concluded by them that Mars was an outpost before the real action took place and the blue marble hanging majestically in space was itself invaded.
