Carry him, Agni, in your arms gently;

Give him a perfect body, a bright body.

Carry him where the ancestors live,

Where there is no more death.

The ceremony is oriented toward invoking the spirit to leave its attachment to the physical body and to pass into the subtle realms of the afterlife where experiences gained and lessons learned are of a different nature. The Hindu understands that lamenting over the dead can cause the spirit to cling to the physical world where it no longer has the physical vehicle necessary to gain experience, thereby impeding its evolution in other realms. A mourning period for each caste is designated in the scriptural injunctions: a few days for the Brahmans, who ideally have the subtle mind to understand the nature of death, to three weeks for the lowest caste, who are more attached to worldly relations and possessions and do not have the understanding of a Brahman.
