Decker arrived back at the apartment a little after nine, pizza in hand. He looked weary. Emma sensed that his day had not gone well. She wanted to ask him about it, but could not find the right words, and he didn’t offer any information. In the end she made small talk until they settled at the kitchen table to eat. It was then that Decker finally let the conversation turn to the afternoon’s events.

“We went to visit an importer Daniel Montague used to bring shipments into the country today,” Decker said between mouthfuls of pizza. “We think that’s how the killers found him.”

“Really?” Emma felt a sudden chill. “Daniel used a few different import companies, depending on what he was having shipped.”

“This was a one man outfit in Brooklyn. Eastern Trade Import and Export Co.” Decker took another slice. “Ever heard of it?”

“Yes.” Emma felt a tingle of apprehension. “Daniel used them several years ago to bring some papyrus into the country. The guy that ran it was odd, and not in a good way. He made my skin crawl.”

“Amir Darzi.”

“That’s him.” Emma remembered how she felt when she first met Darzi, the way he looked at her with beady, black eyes. “Horrible little man. There was something about him I didn’t like, plus he had a reputation.”

“Reputation?”

“For getting things done without drawing unwanted attention. Cutting corners, filing false papers and such.”

“Smuggling.”

“That might be a little harsh, but he certainly wasn’t one to go by the book. I didn’t want to be associated with that kind of thing. I told Daniel as much,” Emma said. “He promised not to use him again.”

“Well, he did. It appears he hired Eastern Trade Imports to move the statue of Anubis out of Egypt. Connor found the import records among the documents in his study. They list several artifacts of little interest. Of course, there’s no mention of the statue, but we’re sure that’s how it arrived in the country.”

“So what did Mr. Darzi have to say?” Emma asked.

“Not much. He’d been dead for days.” Decker toyed with his slice of pizza. “He was tortured, no doubt to get him to give up information on Daniel Montague and where his shipments were delivered.”

“Oh God.”

“Once they found what they wanted, they finished him off with a bullet to the head.”

“So that’s how the killers found out the whereabouts of the statue.”

“Looks that way.”

“Dammit.” Emma felt a sudden pang of sadness. She choked up. “If Daniel hadn’t been so pig headed, if he’d only listened to me, he would still be alive.”

“Probably,” Decker said. He looked at her under hooded eyes. “But he made his decision. You can’t change the past, even if you want to. It’s better to let it go, make your peace. Trust me, I’ve been there.”

“Really?” Emma wiped away a tear. She felt embarrassed to be crying in front of Decker.

“Really.” He reached out, took her hand in his. “I know what it’s like to wish you could go back and do things differently.
