CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Jenny stared out of slats from the closet as they entered. She couldnât see Casey, but knew he was there, hiding in a cupboard under the counter. There were voices before she could see anything. A man and a woman were talking. It sounded like an argument.
âFuck this,â the woman said as they came through the door. âI canât take it anymore. Heâs lost his shit. You know itâs true, Beacon. Donât look at me like Iâm the bitch here.â
It was Lucy. It was fucking Lucy. How the hell could it be Lucy? Everywhere Jenny went, it was always Lucy. And Beacon was here too. Was Declan here? It seemed like everywhere she went she saw Declan. It was like she couldnât escape.
âYouâre overreacting,â Beacon said, in his low, quiet voice. Ever calm. The hunger was creeping up on Jenny. She ground her teeth together. âLet him grieve. They loved each other for Christâs sake. Let him have time to deal with it.â
âHeâs not dealing with it,â she said. âHeâs disappearing every day for hours. Heâs screaming at everyone. Heâs picking fights with punk-ass Heathens. When he does sleep he has nightmares, and when he doesnât sleep heâs even worse.â
âIt hasnât been that long,â said Beacon. âYou have to step back.â
âThatâs what you said before,â Lucy said, her voice suddenly filled with ice. âThatâs what you said to me back then. Give him space and heâll come back to me, wasnât that it, Beacon? And what good did that do me? Munro disappears for weeks and comes back with a little trollop, cute as a fucking button.â Jenny heard her spit. âAnd I smiled and pretended it was all cool for five years. And now itâs my turn. Itâs my fucking turn!â
âIt doesnât work like that, Luce,â said Beacon mildly.
âAnd how the fuck does it work?â said Lucy.
âThat trollop was the love of Munroâs life. You canât just replace her.â Beacon pulled some bottles down and stuffed them into a bag. âAnd donât call her a trollop. Jenny was amazing. We all miss her.â
âYou still think itâs my fault,â she said.
âIt doesnât matter anymore,â said Beacon, sounding tired.
âI didnât kill her,â said Lucy.
âYou didnât stop her either,â said Beacon.
âFuck you, Beacon. Fuck you!â Lucy turned and pushed the large microscope onto the floor with a crash. Jenny balled up her fist. Casey had managed to grab the centrifuge before they found hiding places, but all the equipment could have been used.
She could stop it. She could step out of the closet and bite the bitch in the throat. Lucy was in a rage. She was throwing microscopes and beakers across the room. Beacon walked out silently, but Lucy didnât seem to notice. She wouldnât notice if Jenny came up behind her either. She wouldnât notice until it was too late. Jennyâs vision went red. She clenched her fists and tried to will it away. It almost took her, but then another voice broke through.
âStop it.â It was deep and familiar and Jenny took a step back when she heard it, the red draining away.
