Chapter Sixteen
CONFUSED AND in pain, Navarre ran as far and as fast as he could. His were form was out of his control. Never had shifting been as painful or as deforming as what happened to him tonight. Heâd seen what he looked like through the eyes of his wolf spirit and the size and ferocity of the beast heâd become frightened even him.
Yet the creature didnât even come close to the hideous repulsiveness of the hungers boiling inside of him. Heâd smelled Marissaâs blood and had become ravenous for it. He hadnât been able to stop himself from tasting it, and that ignited a fire that grew stronger by the second. All he could think about was blood.
He ran as hard as he could, hoping to cleanse the burgeoning evil and regain a warriorâs control over his body. But the world and its temptations kept dragging him back under. His senses were more developed than ever before. Everything had a discernible scent. The trees, the vines, the forest floor, the creatures hiding beneath the cover of leaves and even the smell of the blood pounding in their veins.
Though he could see through the eyes of his wolf spirit, he found that he didnât need his vision to locate other creatures in the night. He could sense them, smell them, smell their blood. He reached through a thick wall of vines and grabbed a small animal. Its high-pitched bark of terror rang through the air and he wanted to snap its neck just like heâd wanted to break the priest in half when the man had jabbed him with the sharp stick. He let the small animal drop from his hand before he could tear into its heart and lap up the blood. Some small part of him cried out in horror at the thought.
Still his mouth watered, his fangs ached, and his stomach rumbled. He started to chase after the little creature with four white stripes along its back, but then heard the roar of a fiercer beast that had to be largerâand more of a meal to feast upon.
Time to hunt.
He drew closer to the beast, sensing it, too, was stalking prey within the teeming wildness of the jungle. Then a breeze broke through the brush and vines and he caught the scent of humans. Marissaâs image flooded his mind. Remembered pleasure with her exploded through his body and brought him to a standstill. The driving hunger for blood lessened beneath his rising tide of lust for her.
He heard a womanâs laugh, and though he knew it wasnât Marissa, he followed the sultry sound. The rain forest thinned, giving way to a clearing where six small bungalows clustered around a larger building. He circled the place, listening for more of the womanâs voice. A sign read GREEN WATER JUNGLE RESORT. Each of the smaller houses were separated by tall grass walls and each had a raised pool of hot bubbling water behind it. The laugh sounded again. It came from his left and he followed until he saw a mortal man and woman in the bubbling water.
