Chapter 12
After that, Tanya proceeded to lock herself in my house. Not just the house, in the guest room. I heard the lock click every night. She scurried out like a scavenging rat to get snacks and wine or beer from the kitchen, then carried her supplies back to her room. She kept the blinds closed all day long.
âI canât walk past that window and take the chance of him seeing me. Maybe heâll take me out right there with some type of military weapon.â
I tried not to laugh because it wasnât funny, and I was upset too. I didnât know why he would have followed me, asked about me if she was the one he wanted. âI really donât thinkââ
âAnything is possible,â she said. âAnything. You donât know people.â
âI think I know how people are in general. And Iâve known people who were in the military. They donât run around with weapons.â
âThey probably donât assume friendliness means youâre hitting on them either. So I donât think your experience applies.â
âYou canât just hide out in the guest room for the next year, or however long it takes.â
âIâm scared, Alexis. You donât seem to understand that. The guy tried to hit me. Thatâs the first step over the line, headed toward violence.â
âIâm not saying thatâs not a big deal, not at all, ever. But that is a long way from using a sniper rifle or a bazooka to shoot through my living room window.â
âWhy did you get that window anyway? And why donât you have drapes? Youâre insane.â
âI like looking out at night.â
âYou could still have drapes and leave them open when you want to look out.â
I turned and went into the kitchen. I started boiling water for tea.
A moment later, Tanya was behind me. âLetâs open some wine.â
I sighed. âOkay.â
âWhereâs Jerry?â
âHanging out with some friends.â
She nodded but looked annoyed. âI feel safer when heâs here except that I didnât like him going out to look for Dave. That was scary. Iâm glad he didnât find him.â
âSure. So youâre going to hunker down in my guest room for how long? Hoarding food like youâre a little squirrel?â
She laughed.
âItâs not funny, Tanya. You canât live like this.â
âBetter than being dead.â
I carried the wine and two glasses into the dining room, headed toward the living room.
âWe canât go in there.â
âCome on. Youâre being ridiculous.â
âWhat happened to your oh-Iâm-so-scared-someoneâs-following-me?â
âMaybe seeing you lose it is making me less afraid. He hasnât done anything. And he never came back to the store to ask more questions.â
âHeâs very careful. Heâs a planner. I donât think youâre taking this seriously.â
I set the bottle and glasses on the dining room table. âWell, Iâm not drinking wine in the guest room, so I guess youâre on your own. You are anyway because Iâm calling the police. Even if you want to live like a prisoner, I do not.â
âNo! Please. No! Why wonât you listen to me?â
âIâll feel safer even if theyâre just aware this is going on. We have a very good police force here.
