Chapter Twelve
Javier
I had to get out of there. I had to get away from them, from her. I couldnât handle looking her in the eye today. Not when all I want to do is bend her over and take her hard. I walked away and left her to fend for herself.
âGet the fuck over here,â I roar as the man Iâm after tries to run. I fire off a warning shot that stops him in his tracks. He stands still, slowly turning to face me while Mateo chuckles. His hands are in the air, and the closer I get, the faster his breathing becomes. I watch his eyes, the fear of whatâs to come in them. There is no escaping this, escaping me.
âYour job was to deliver the product and collect the money. How is it that my product is gone along with the money?â I ask, aiming the gun between his eyes. He doesnât flinch, just stares straight ahead.
âNow isnât the time for silence, pendejo.â Mateo chimes in now. The man looks between us before he speaks.
âI was jumped. What could I have done?â
âCome to me! You could have come to me and told me what happened. Instead, you hid like a bitch! You ran,â I growl as I step closer to him. Pressing the gun to his head, I pull the trigger. Blood splatters and his body falls to the floor in front of me. Mateo steps back as I turn and look around the room.
âOver a hundred thousand missing,â I say as I take in the warehouse.
âCruz isnât going to like this,â Mateo adds.
âNo shit. I donât like this. He wasnât jumped, which means it isnât far. Get the guys out there to start searching. He couldnât have gone far with it and still be here,â I tell him. Thereâs no way he moved that amount of products very far from here.
Mateo pulls his phone out and makes a few calls while I wander around the nearly empty warehouse. My nerves are on edge. As each one fires off, they leave me feeling uneasy.
âGuys are on it. The body has been dug up. You ready to head over there?â I nod my head and wipe my face on my sleeve, removing tiny droplets of blood. Mateo and I walk out of the warehouse and climb in the car while the driver starts it up and pulls off.
âWhat happened with the two of you?â Mateo finally asks.
âNot a lot. She showed up in my room. I showed her why she should stay away.â
âWas it that simple?â he asks.
âMaybe not to her, but it was for me. She doesnât belong with me, Mateo. I can handle being married as long as she stays away from me,â I remind him. Heâs silent for a long minute before passing me a cigarette. I light it up and inhale deeply.
âWhat if she doesnât stay away? The girl has a mind of her own, hermano. She doesnât seem to care what we have to say.
