Chapter 20

Two days after the full moon

Jasper’s expression was that of someone whose mind was miles away as he stared off into the horde of zombies that aimlessly meandered about in front of him.

“Have you considered how you’d like our help?” Hank telepathically asked as he shuffled up next to him.

Looking at Hank with his peripheral vision while keeping his eyes on the horde, Jasper nodded.

“You move with less grace today,” he observed.

Hank moved his head as best as he could to create a nod, “As I mentioned, I worsen with each day. If you desire our help, I suggest we act soon.”

“Every moment that Lila is in the clutches of those monsters is a dangerous one. As eager as I am to rescue her, I think it’s important to have the best plan possible. I doubt we’ll have a second chance. I would like to take some blood samples back to my lab and see if I can reverse or retard the virus in those of you who are less stricken,” Jasper offered. “The better prepared we are for battle, the greater the odds of our succeeding.”

“You refer to the vampires as monsters when, technically, you are one as well,” Hank mused.

“I am one of many things,” Jasper thoughtfully admitted. “Having spent time amongst all three of what I am, I believe that the vampire is the worst of them. Therefore, he qualifies as a monster. If I am also a monster, I pray to keep that part of me subdued until I am able to eradicate vampirism from my body.”

Hank sounded impressed as he asked, “You can do that?”

“Not yet,” Jasper admitted, “but if I can change their DNA, I believe anything is possible. I have hopes, just not the time.”

Hank gave Jasper a nod that was accompanied with what the scientist interpreted as a satisfied smile as he telepathically said, “My people are not happy about rescuing witches. Perhaps if you succeed in improving their state they will be more willing to go on this mission.”

“Do they understand that the witches will support them afterward?” Jasper asked.

“We have had nothing but lies and deceit coming from our enemies. This includes the witches. It will have to happen before they believe it,” Hank replied.

Jasper nodded to indicate that he understood.

“I trust Ben,” he said aloud. “If he says that they will support you, then that is what his coven will do.”

“Just his coven, though, correct?” Hank asked.

Jasper’s face showed his sorrow as he slowly shook his head and said, “Ben cannot speak for the other witches. Since his coven is the closest to your territory, you can at least take comfort in that.”

“I cannot speak for the other witches,” Ben admitted as he walked up from behind them and stood next to Hank, “but I can promise that I will do my best to change their opinion of you. My time here has done that for me.” Tossing away the straw that he’d been chewing on, he added,
