Don’t be in the Dark

When considering used lighting, be aware that the lovely lamp that is exactly suited to your room of choice may need rewiring—if you get it for a song, it may be worth it. Get a precise estimate of the cost of any necessary repair or rewiring, however. Lighting experts often charge by the socket, so factor this in when considering buying a vintage chandelier with eight light sockets.

Tablecloths, drapes, and curtains can all be purchased used, are often available in good shape at charity boutiques, and can often be used interchangeably. A long curtain or even a patterned sheet or quilt can become a tablecloth if the fabric is opulent-looking enough (or you can place a translucent lace tablecloth over the top, thus disguising and dressing it up). Conversely, a striking iridescent, two-toned, jewel-colored tablecloth can become dining room curtains.
