Mike wasn’t sure what the night had in store but planned to be prepared for all possibilities. Lighting a fire in the fireplace made the house warm and cosy. He put condoms and lubricant in the nightstand drawer and also put some in the family room, just in case. He decided to play it cool and let Niko take the lead—if the man was comfortable having sex that night, they would. If he said good night after dinner, Mike would be disappointed but he wouldn’t be crushed. He was slowly learning to play the game with a whole new set of rules.

The lasagne was in the oven when his doorbell chimed shortly before seven. He opened the door to a smiling Niko wearing jeans and a sweater under his dark coat. He extended a bottle of wine. “Zdravo. Hello. I thought this would suit the lasagne.”

“It does, thanks. Come in.”

The man stepped inside, grabbing Mike’s shoulders and planting a kiss on one cheek, then the other. “Sorry again about last night. Drazan was happy to see me. It’s the least I can do to lighten his burden.” He pulled back and smiled. “But tonight Luka is on duty, and my phone is off.” He waved the device then shoved it in his coat pocket.

“Allow me.” Mike reached for the coat and helped take it off. He hung it in the front closet and followed his guest, who had wandered into the family room.

“This is mo’can—great! A castle—dvorac.” He admired the large television and furnishings.

“Not exactly a castle.” Mike chuckled. “It’s comfortable.”

“In Croatia, a room this big would only be found in a castle or a palace. This is nice, Mike. You should see my apartment.”

“Have a seat.” He motioned to the sofa. “I need to pull out the lasagne and let it sit for a few minutes. I’ll open this wine, too.” He walked into the kitchen and called, “So your apartment is small?”

“Da. Yes. But I’m never there. I travel at least three days a week for work, sometimes more.”

“Steve said you travel a lot. You’re a model?”

“Mmm hmm,” Niko answered from close behind him.

Mike jumped, startled, and turned around.

“Sorry.” The man grinned at him, eyes twinkling. “Steve told me you work on the television?”

“I do.” He was slightly surprised Niko didn’t know. Most guys in Chicago watched the sports network, and his was a familiar face. “I’m a sports broadcaster.” He popped the cork off the wine bottle and poured two glasses.

“Ah.” Niko picked up one glass and sipped. “Will you dislike me if I admit I’m not a big sports fan? The only one I can stand to watch at all is football.”

Mike reached for his glass and smiled. Before he could respond, Niko added, “Of course, in this country they call it soccer. But it’ll always be football to me.”

He’d taken a drink and snorted it out. “Soccer? Oh my god, that’s right. Soccer is called football in Europe, isn’t it?” He wiped his chin and they both laughed.
