Since we’re not of a superstitious bent, there aren’t many historic buildings in London that bring out the Madame Arcati in us. But one Victorian East End pub genuinely chills to the marrow. Stand under the faded signage for the Ten Bells public house, in the shadow of Hawksmoor’s Christ Church, Spitalfields, on a black night, and tell us you don’t feel it too. It was on this corner of Commercial and Fournier streets in 1888 that the prostitute Mary Kelly plied her trade and was last seen before her murder at the hands of Jack the Ripper. Her friend and fellow victim ‘Black Annie’ Chapman had taken a last drink at the Ten Bells before being cast out into the night; her mutilated body was discovered just before 6 am in a yard behind neighbouring Hanbury Street.

“Only a plaque naming the Ripper’s victims acknowledges the Ten Bells’ macabre history, but the pub certainly doesn’t need ghoulish memorabilia to have presence.”
