ANJA

I had been surprised to see Jakob coming out of the elevator when I was coming down the hall. He looked wearier than I had ever seen him. If nothing else, I could be a friend that listened tonight. I asked him to dinner, and he agreed. He went to drop off his stuff and popped back out of his door to join me in the hall.

“That was fast,” I said.

“Yep. Just had to throw that stuff in my closet. The deli down the street is really good and has great coffee.”

“That’s where I was originally headed so yeah, let’s go. The only thing is they don’t have coffee as good as the stuff you gave me the other day.”

His step stuttered, but he caught up fast enough.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Someone gave you coffee?”

“Mm-hmm. And my favorite Belgian chocolates this morning. I imagine that it was practically a national offense for a Swiss man.”

“It was.”

I heard him mumble under his breath, grumpily. I had to put a hand over my mouth to keep from laughing, but he caught me.

“Don’t try to stop that laugh. You’ll start snorting, and then we’re all in danger of the aftermath hiccups,” he said grinning at me.

True to his word, I did snort, and he bent over, holding his stomach, laughing so hard. And, of course, the hiccups came. I couldn’t control them, and nothing would stop them. I just had to ride them out. I gave him my best glare, but the hiccups seemed to diminish the effect. He grabbed me up in a hug, and it felt so damn good. I soaked in his scent and body warmth, and then, too quickly, it was gone.

“I’m so sorry. I know you don’t want anything to do with me, but I just didn’t even think. It just felt so normal. I’ll respect your wishes.”

He stepped back another huge step. He looked terrible. Like the brief hug had felt as good to him as it did to me and now, he’d never feel it again. I felt the same way, and it was all my fault.

“It’s okay. I want to be friends, Jakob. I can’t keep pretending. Please, can you forgive my extreme bitchiness?”

I gave him a tentative smile as I begged internally, ‘please, oh please, take my olive branch.’ Please. Please. He didn’t hesitate for a second before he smiled broadly at me, showing that damned dimple.

“I’d like that, Anja. Very much. Come on, friend. I could really use that coffee and someone to talk to. Plus, we need to feed you; you’ve lost too much weight. Hence, the five pounds of chocolate that I was going to spread out. Now you get it all.”

“Oh, God, Jakob. I’ll gain ten pounds just looking at it!”

“Is that really a bad thing?” he asked me, looking me straight in the eye while swiping his elevator card.

“I guess not. I have lost a little too much weight,” I said softly.

“Why?” he asked when we stepped into the box.
