CHALCEDONY DISAPPEARED AND reappeared in front of Queen Isis. Before Coal could follow, Djamel pulled him back.

“What are you doing?” Coal asked. “It's time.”

“No, you’re supposed to stay back and look for an opening.”

“Chalcedony ordered you to watch me?”

“Yes, because you're here for backup. If you’re hurt before we can use you, then you’re useless. We stay back and look for an opening.”

“We just watch?” Coal snapped.

“Yes, we watch.”

Three elven soldiers appeared at the back of the entrance. Before they could step into the room, Tetrick, Alisha, and Avonnah had their swords drawn and were forcing the soldiers back.

Coal watched as Queen Isis and Chalcedony fought. Queen Isis had shifted into her large beast with talons. They darted in and out of sight, lunging at each other.

“Hello, Coal,” said Ashley. “You've grown.” She stood just out of reach, ignoring the fighting around her.

“You remember me?” Coal asked, confused.

“Yes,” she answered. “Your mother used to be my hairdresser.” She reached towards Coal.

Djamel pulled Coal back and withdrew his sword. “Don’t let her touch you,” he warned.

Ashley stepped back. “Whoa… I just wanted to talk. I don’t even have a weapon.”

Her lack of a weapon didn’t stop Djamel. He swung his sword. With practiced precision, Ashley rolled to the side, falling underneath the blade.

Coal didn’t notice she had something in her hands until two small cords with needle-like tips shot towards Djamel. The shadow guard cut the cords with a swing of his sword. The moment his sword cut through the cords, blue arcs of electricity jumped from the wires, through the metal blade. Djamel’s arms, legs, and torso became taut and rigid as he shook and fell to the floor.

Coal withdrew his sword, fighting the urge to bend over and see if Djamel was okay. He knew not to turn his back on her. “What did you do to him?”

“I tased him. He was attacking me, and I had to defend myself.” She sounded as though it genuinely hurt her to hurt him. “He’ll be okay in a couple of hours.”

Her hands were raised in front of her again. When she stepped closer, he lifted his sword higher. “Don’t come any closer.”

She frowned. “Do you think I would hurt you? Jade would kill me if I even touched you.”

Coal paused. He should not have been listening to her, but he couldn’t help himself. “What do you know about my mother? What happened to her?”

“I know where she is.” Ashley stepped closer.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not. I can take you to her.”

“Coal, don’t let her touch you!” Chalcedony shouted from the other side of the room. He was supposed to be helping with Queen Isis, not talking. He raised his sword and felt the blade pierce the woman’s flesh.

She screamed and dropped to the floor. Blood pooled beneath her hand as she held the wound.

Ashley tore her gaze from her arm. “You cut me!” she shouted. The beautiful woman was gone. An old woman with grey, pallid skin and no teeth was now kneeling before him.
