CHAPTER FIVE

Piper woke early that morning to the sound of his laborers arriving to work and on time as usual. He came out from his camper all smiles and greeted his men. “Good morning, guys, or should I say, my happy helpers,” he chuckled. A silence from the men was a contagious reaction, due to his unusual good mood. They were afraid to reply with any more than a half-cocked grin or a nod of the head. They were fearful if they said anything, he might just snap back into his normal, hateful antics, raging about anything and everything under the sun. “So, boys, anything eventful happen this weekend?” Piper asked his crew.

One man replied, “Over coffee this morning, I was watching the local news. There was a late-night barn fire that had the township on their toes. Lucky for the property owner, nobody was hurt or killed. But it looked bad. I’d say it was probably a total loss, by the looks of the media clips. Oh yeah, and it was that lady who drove in the Mud Digging contest, the one who rolled her truck. Showed pictures of that truck burnt to a crisp. I imagine that was heartbreaking, and pretty sure her name was Sierra Wolfe.”

Piper bellowed out a laugh. “You don’t say. Well, after her failing performance from tumbling that truck, she doesn’t have any business acting like a man. Waste of good pussy, if you ask me.” Some of the guys laughed along with Piper, just to amuse him. They hoped his mood would stay on the unusual upswing of good. Then he remembered. “Oh yeah, the boss might be coming by sometime today, so be on your toes. He is nobody to fuck with.”

Surprised by Piper’s last comment, one of the laborers spoke up. “No shit, so we are finally going to meet the big guy, huh? I’ve been with Hilltop for almost three years and have yet to meet him and still don’t know his name.”

“Yeah, well, he’s not the real social type, if you know what I mean. As long as that bastard pays me, I don’t give a fuck what his name is!” Piper exclaimed. “Speaking of money, we’re burning daylight. Let’s get fracking, all you fracker’s,” then laughed like a fool at his own sense of humor.

Unlike Piper, Sierra barely slept and worried about ordering more hay and feed for her horse. “Carmen, I have two hours before I need to be at the township hall. I’ve written a list of things I need to accomplish before I leave. Do you think there is any way you can cancel your appointment with Sadie, at least until tomorrow? I could really use your help.”

“I’m ahead of you. I’ve already texted her and asked if we could make it another day. I’m all yours. So what can I do to help out, babe?”

“I called my insurance company, and they’ll be here this afternoon, after the fire marshal makes his report. I ordered hay and feed that will be delivered in a few hours.
