Italy’s fourth largest lake is tranquil and mostly pretty (avoid the bleaker northern coast), and great for some summer swimming, sailing or windsurfing – it is about the only stretch of open water in Umbria. The lake is shallow, which means that in summer the water is always warm. Use the little resort town of Castiglione del Lago as a base. There are some nice sandy beaches, and the town sits scenically beside the water on a fortified promontory. Castiglione’s castle, the Rocca del Leone (Fortress of the Lion), dates mostly from the 16th century, though parts date back to the 1250s. From the ramparts there are views across the lake.
