I had left the draft of this letter in Turin; then I left for Rome and have not been back here for three weeks. I am signing it only now, the day after poor Elio’s funeral.4 All this to explain my prolonged silence.

TO HANS MAGNUS ENZENSBERGER— BERLIN

Rome, 22 February 1966

Dear Enzensberger,

WE ARE IN THE SAD PROCESS OF GETTING OUT THE LAST ISSUES of Il Menabò, the ones Elio had approved and prepared. The German issue is ready and will appear soon: seeing it all assembled, with your information about every contributor, which complements perfectly the introductory essay, it seems to me a fine and useful volume.

We will also include a piece from the recent play by Peter Weiss, something Elio had personally chosen in the last few weeks when he was able to read. It is the piece (I’m quoting from memory as I do not have it to hand) about the woman who works for Farben (The Ballad of Lill Topper, I think it’s called).5

Could you write us a brief page of introduction for this piece too? In fact it really is necessary since it is the only item for which we do not have your “introduction.” I would be very grateful if you could send it to us as soon as possible, because the issue is already being typeset.

Write and tell me what you are working on, and tell me about Kursbuch and your other work. Now that Elio is no longer with us, and so many things that he stood for and embodied are, it seems to me, now gone, perhaps the only thing to do [is] to keep closer contact with his friends who work in a certain way in various countries.
