One of the first things that Guido Baggio did when he brought his Italian family from Argentina to Chicago in 1953 was to drive out to Grant Park and get a good look at the skyscrapers of their new city. The St. Philip Benizi 1961 graduating class included Calogero Lombardo and several other children of recent immigrants. This was one of the last graduating classes for St. Philip’s, which was razed in 1965 to make way for the expansion of the Cabrini Green housing project. The legendary Luigi Giambastiani (third row, fifth from left) served as pastor of St. Philip’s for about 50 years. (Lombardo.)
