Sophie settled on the couch with a satisfied sigh, beer in hand as Itâs a Wonderful Life played on the TV. To her left, the tree glowed with multicolored lights and a lifetime of familiar ornaments, clay pressed stars she and Tanner had made as kids, paper cutouts adorned with sequins and glitter, and glass balls of all sizes and colors.
Home. Sheâd been back for twenty-four hours, in the house where sheâd grown up, sleeping in her old bedroom. Right now, she was curled in her favorite spot on the couch while she waited for Tanner and his wife to arrive for family game night. Some things never changed. But others did. Her dad, who for decades had sat across from her with the Sunday paper spread across his knees, was now swiping through the news on his tablet, glasses perched on his nose.
âNeed any help?â Sophie called to her mom, who was puttering around in the kitchen.
âNope,â her mom answered. âCasseroleâs already in the oven. Iâm just tossing together a quick salad to go with it.â
âIf weâre having salad, we also need dessert,â Sophie reminded her. It was a Rindell family rule, one that her friends had been insanely jealous of when she was still in school.
âThen youâd better get in here and make something,â her mom said.
âComing.â Sophie slid off the couch and walked to the kitchen, still carrying her beer. âWhat have I got to work with?â
âI think thereâs a box of brownie mix in the pantry somewhere,â her mom said.
âOn it.â Sophie took a swig of beer and set down the bottle to rummage through the pantry. A minute later, she held up the brownie box triumphantly. âBonus, theyâre dark chocolate.â
âI might have bought those specifically with you in mind,â her mom told her with a grin.
âBecause youâre the best.â Sophie started gathering the ingredients she needed. There were no fancy chefs in her family. Her mom was an adequate cook and had made sure Sophie and Tanner always had a homecooked meal on the table at dinnertime, but she embraced easy favorites like pizza, casseroles, and spaghetti, and her brownies always came from a box.
âI have a proposition for you,â her mom said as she chopped tomatoes.
âOh yeah?â Sophie whisked together water, olive oil, and a raw egg in a large mixing bowl.
âGo see Stuart tomorrow at the theater.â
âStuart?â Sophie gave her a quizzical look. âWhy?â
Stuart Grimmel owned the Alton Theater, where Sophie had spent practically every free moment of her childhood and teenage years. Sheâd acted in the theaterâs youth productions through elementary and middle school, and in high school, sheâd graduated to the theaterâs main stage, taking any and every role she could get. Once sheâd been old enough, sheâd also worked there, soaking up as much of the backstage experience as she could. Sheâd painted sets and sewed costumes, worked the lights, and swept the stage after everyone else had gone home.
It had been her home away from home before she moved to Manhattan, and Stuart had been her mentor.
