A long time ago, when I worked for the phone company, I used to get in trouble. I blame one man: Tom Peters. Yes, the author and provocateur, most famously known for In Search of Excellence but who should be more known for writing books like ReImagine and the article “The Brand Called You.” He taught me through his work that I was the CEO of my cubicle, that I was the president of Chris Brogan, inc.
Oh, the trouble I got into. I believed every word Peters said. I decided that my department needed an internal newsletter, so I made one. I drew the art. I found the stories. I copied it on the copier. No one said I could. I did my regular work, too. And then, it became something people were looking forward to reading. I mean, I’m aggrandizing a little bit, but people liked it, and I started getting requests for what else I might cover in the pages of this newsletter.
In subsequent roles at different departments and companies, I believed that I was the CEO of my role. I owned it. I created more than my colleagues. I build new methods of how to get work done better, faster, etc. And bosses noticed. Then, I was made a boss. Then, I wrote a new version of my boss’s resume, because he decided he was going to retire from the phone company and join a startup. A week after he got there, he gave me a job that I created again.
Permission. One secret in brave people like you is that we both have learned that permission is ours to give. We can give ourselves permission.
S. Anthony Iannarino and I put out a project (a video, an audio, and a workbook) called Finding Your Superpower of Flight. It’s full of ideas about permission, and I won’t rob from that to give you some ideas here, but I’ll tell you that he (a top salesman in a $40 million company) and I (a bestselling author who has consulted for some of the biggest brands you know) both succeeded in our lives because we gave ourselves permission.
WHAT DO WE EVEN MEAN BY “PERMISSION?”
The whole story of permission as it applies to your bravery is that you catch on that you are the author of your story, that you are the hero you’ve been waiting for. It means that you’ll claim your own crown. It means that this is your show.
Why is that so difficult to feel? I’m not sure. I can’t find the right kind of psychology studies to show you results. I can tell you anecdotally that there are lots of people (maybe you) that have this thing where you have this huge feeling that is expressed like this: “No one said I could…” or “They didn’t say…” or “Someone should…” or “I’m not qualified for this.”
Permission is about accepting that you’re the one who will solve your challenges, and that you are the right person for the task. This is so difficult for some people.
