"Don't try that innocent Boy Scout smile on me, Shepherd. You knew I'd figure out what you were doing!" Val still had him pinned in the flashlight and wasn't about to let him go. Maybe Sam had fooled the whole town into believing he'd stabbed her in the financial back by opening a rival bookstore, but she knew otherwise. Even the devil couldn't open a store overnight on the power of his charm alone. There was only one place on earth where he could have accumulated a source of stock that fast, and Val knew her inventory down to the last paperback. "Those were my books you were selling, you louse!"
"I know, honey, and the idea worked like a charm." Sam illustrated by lifting two huge fistfuls of greenbacks. "You made piles of money today."
"Forget the honey and forget the money. I've a mind to call the sheriff and have you arrested. I don't know how you got in here, but you had to either steal my store key or just plain break and enter. And then there's grand theft of my propertyâand from the look of those boxes near the front door, you're anticipating more grand theft. Not that I'm going to let you get away with thisâ"
"You seem to be a little ticked," Sam said cautiously.
"A little ticked?" Val snapped off the flashlight, wishing she were ticked instead of miserably sick at heart. She'd taken one look at his Grand Opening sign that morning and nearly died from guilt. Sam had conned her into believing that his feelings stopped at friendship. He'd lied. No casual friend went to such complicated lengths to help someone else unless he cared. Deeply and way, way too much.
She'd failed to protect everyone else she loved, but damned if she was going to hurt Sam. He had to be stopped. She'd tried being reasonable and got nowhere, but anger was a tougher weaponâand she'd had all day to work up a fake head of steam. "If you think I'm just a little ticked, Shepherd, you'd better be near a ground. Because if you've never seen a redhead in a full-blown temper beforeâ"
"At least think twice before calling the sheriff, sweetheart. Honestly, I don't think it'd do you any good." Sam's tone was as soothing and easy as a balmy spring breeze. "I've met him. I really don't think he likes people in his jail. In fact, I think all he'd probably do is put me in your personal safekeeping until I shape up. Like Jonesey and Lincoln."
"You're not Jonesey or Lincoln." And Val didn't like it, the way he was slowly edging around the counter and coming toward her. Sam didn't appear the least intimidated by her temper. Inexplicably, he didn't even seem to notice her fake temper. His shadowed eyes had lanced on her face like a magnet that wouldn't let go. "Don't you come any closer, you low-down varmint!"
"I know you probably won't believe this, but it's a relief to hear you yelling at me," Sam said gently.
