Chapter 13

- DODGER -

* * *

It’s just before dawn when my eyes open, creature of habit that I am. To my brain, apparently it matters very little that I spent half the night enjoying some of the best sex ever. I still wake up in time to see the first rays of sunlight touch our side of the island.

But this time, I’m not yet anxious to sit on my lanai with my coffee to welcome a new day. I much prefer just taking in the sight of Samantha as she slumbers next to me.

I’ve really done it this time.

It seemed like a perfectly fine arrangement last night, so perfect that I couldn’t possibly do anything but act on it. Once… and then a couple times to follow. She’s single—thank God because when she showed up on my doorstep last night, I was ready to end the night exactly the way we did, Carl or not.

And I don’t need to remind myself that I’m single.

So this should be perfect.

Except that she’s leaving soon. And she’s one of my sister-in-law’s best friends, godmother to my niece.

That means I’ll likely have to see her again from time to time, each time Annie kindly pops out another niece or nephew for me to spoil rotten. So when either or both of us has paired off with someone else, won’t that be awkward?

I could probably handle that, I consider. Then I glance at her again, her eyes fluttering as though she’s lost in a dream, and I feel this warmth inside of me that doesn’t mesh up with the brief span of time she’s been here. It’s too early for this—these feelings that I can’t deny are stirring inside me.

I can’t even blame the post-sex haze for clouding my judgement. Because the fact is, I’ve felt this connection with her for days now, even though there’s nothing logical about it.

Frowning, I’m reminded of what my brothers always tell me. Dodger, you think too damn much.

Stirring beneath a sheet that only half covers her gorgeous body, Samantha lets out a languid sigh as her eyes open.

Damn, I thought tropical sunrises were the best way to greet the morning. They pale in comparison to this.

“Hey,” she breathes out contentedly.

“Good morning. Want me to get you some coffee?” I like that I already know how she likes it. I like that having her here with me almost seems like a routine.

A routine I could definitely get used to.

“Not yet. I love listening to the ocean in the morning.”

“Me, too.”

“Sooo…” she finally begins, as though it’s a word that needs to be said. “That was nice.”

“Nice. That’s a pretty conservative statement,” I notice. “I would have gone for a bit stronger language than that.”

She laughs. “So you’re a doctor and an editor this morning?”

“If I really was an editor, I wouldn’t edit out a damn thing from last night,” I can’t help pointing out. “Except I might have just extended the whole thing. Make the night stretch a lot longer.
