Book Four

Chapter One

I was sitting at the far end of the football field, under a massive apple tree, clutching the letter she had written to me. I had my eyes closed, and I enjoyed the feel of the cool autumn breeze, caressing my cheeks, and playing with my hair.

She would be here any moment now, and my heart was already beating louder and faster than it ever had, and don’t even get me started on my brain.

Weird scenarios, that always ended with me making a fool out of myself, or having my heart broken, played in my head, and no matter how hard I tried to quieten this little piece of meat inside my head that was driving me crazy, I could not be successful.

I opened my eyes, and saw that while I was meditating on all the ways I could screw this up, the clouds had covered the sky, and the stars had once again disappeared, which I did not like, because I always felt safer when the stars twinkled above me.

I always imagined my father looking down on me from the heavens above, a star that would always guide me no matter how dark my surroundings would get.

The football pitch was huge, and it was bordered by apple trees all around, with benches placed at irregular intervals. And on one of those benches, we had decided to meet.

My pen pal, my crush, my lover, or perhaps just a friend.

Who knew?

We had been exchanging letters every day for two months, and I knew everything about her, well, except her name, her address, what she looks like, and yeah, whether she is even a girl or not.

But I was pretty confident that she was, because no boy I knew had handwriting as beautiful and as archaic as the one this girl had, and her letters always smelled of lilac and gooseberries, which could either mean she was a nerd who loved The Witcher games, or she was just someone who had an exquisite taste when it came to perfumes.

I thought back on the first day I had received a note from her, which she had slipped under the door to my room at the shared university apartments.

The note said she knew I was openly gay, but she wasn’t, and that she had always wanted to come and talk to me about what it is like to finally come out, and live life freely.

But she was also scared of people, and her social circle, which she knew would make her an outcast if she ever came out to them, and from that day onwards, we had decided not to share any personal information about each other, except for the fact that she was also an undergrad student at Greenwood University, which was attended by more than 1500 undergrad female students.
