Chapter 11

Chelsea

“Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!”

I was trying not to panic over what I had committed to. I could not back down now. This was real. Devon and I were fake dating. The thought that I was dating such a rude, arrogant man made my skin crawl. It was hard to believe that the Devon I knew now was the same person I found charming all those years ago. I had to do this for Kayla though.

I went home that day completely paranoid. There was no way I could stop checking social media just in case someone had seen us together and decided to post a picture. That would ruin everything. All this needed to come out after I dealt with Felicity otherwise, I could lose my job. I dreaded having that conversation with Felicity. There was no doubt this would affect her opinion of me but I would deal with that after all this was over. My daughter’s safety and happiness came above everything.

I decided to turn in early, needing all the rest I could get for tomorrow.

That Wednesday morning was uneventful. I dropped Kayla off at her new day-care. There were fewer tears today which was a relief. She missed the friends that she had made but I did this for her own good. I was still paranoid about Derrick, even though I hadn’t seen or heard from him since Monday. Still, I wasn’t willing to take any chances.

I got to Felicity’s office and found that she was already in there. It’s now or never. I knocked on her door and went in.

“Good morning, Chelsea. This is unexpected visit. How can I help you?” She ushered me into her office and motioned for me to take a seat.

“Good morning! I came here today because I need to disclose an office relationship to you.”

“Who’s relationship?” she said as she stood up from her desk to retrieve the required documents.

“Mine.” She froze. I could tell she didn’t expect that. I had only been working here for two and a half weeks. She regained her composure and sat down with the documents in hand. She cleared her throat and asked, “With whom?”

I took a deep breath. After I said his name, there was no coming back from this. “Devon Baxter.” This time she did not bother hiding the look of shock on her face.

“I know it’s surprising but we met recently. No matter how much I tried to deny it, I was immediately smitten by him. I know it’s moving a little fast but we want to see where this will go and explore our relationship,” I said hoping that I sounded convincing.

“Devon Baxter? The ball player?” she asked, still clearly dumbfounded.

“Yes, ma’am,” I responded. That jolted her out of her shock. She cleared her throat and picked out the documents that we would need to sign.

“Normally, I would explain the implications of signing this document but I don’t think I need to. The two of you need to sign it and give it back to me for filing.
