Iron could feel Brett pulling away from him as they waited for Copper to join them. The Angelus was Silver’s brother and cousin to Platinum. Silver and Copper shared a mother, but Silver’s father was the one currently usurping the throne. Copper was young, but he had proven his worth and was also the fastest flyer next to Steel and himself. Steel was the only other sworn warrior with them, and Platinum could not be left undefended.

His father had said in stories he’d told Iron as a child that the bond was the single most wonderful and terrifying thing an Angelus could experience and Iron, in his ignorant youth, had scoffed and claimed nothing could scare him.

He had never been more wrong.

Everything about the smaller human male scared him to death now he knew the male was his for eternity, or however long the great power, Mother Nature, decided to give him.

He’d had to fight the instinct to grab the bag of supplies Brett was holding and carry it in case his bonded pulled a muscle, and he wanted to carry him, too, lest the male fall on one of the many uneven rocks on the cave floor. There were at least seven horrific scenarios rushing through his head at any one moment and it was driving him to insanity.

Iron clung to the fact that Brett had not only managed to scale the rock face with him unconscious, but also tended his wounds as evidence that his worry was unfounded. Unfortunately, it did little to calm him.

Perhaps Platinum would have some advice.

Stretching and shaking his wings out helped to relieve the tension, but it also gained the attention of the two humans.

One looked at him with concern and the other blankly while playing with a blade.

Sighing, Iron cast his gaze skyward out of the small cave entrance to track the sliver of red drifting through the clouds.

His bonded came to stand beside him and touched his shoulder. “Everything all right, birdman?”

“That him?”

The uncle’s question surprised him. Though perhaps it shouldn’t have. Brett’s uncle must be a skilled hunter and tracker to have spotted Copper. It both impressed him and made Iron endeavor to keep a closer watch on him.

“Yes. I suggest you prepare to climb out to Copper’s back when he hovers close. It will take too much time and make us too vulnerable if we go to the ground only to ascend again,” he warned the human before turning to Brett. “To fly with you for the first time is my honor and privilege,” he announced formally and extended his hand.

Brett looked at him for a moment and, thankfully, took his hand and allowed Iron to guide him onto his back. It took some maneuvering, but Brett settled into the dip between his wing roots. Having his bonded wrapped around his body did things to him that he’d never experienced before.

Brett’s hands combed through his hair and Iron let himself briefly appreciate the touch. “Hold on,”
