The rise of the Islamic State (ISIS)

America’s War on Terror was largely successful in eliminating Al Qaeda’s central leadership, but it did not remove the threat of Islamic terrorism. Rather, as Al Qaeda “Central” weakened, “affiliates” materialized and expanded throughout the Muslim world, including Al Qaeda in Iraq, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (North Africa), and Al-Shabab in Somalia. Other extremist groups were allied with Al Qaeda, like Boko Haram in Nigeria, Jamaah Islamiyah in Indonesia, and Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines. One – Al Qaeda in Iraq – split from Al Qaeda in 2014 and transformed into the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which then became the world’s most dangerous jihadist organization.
