They took me to a different safe house, a nice place a few miles away from where Parker and I had been staying. They put me in a bed with my clothes still on then hooked me up to an IV. They gave me a blood transfusion, and that helped me feel much better. I wasn’t so weak. After lying there for thirty minutes, I drifted off to sleep.

I woke up sometime later from the sound of my monitor. The IV was still in my arm, and a beeping noise echoed in the bedroom. My eyes opened and focused on the person sitting at my bedside. My vision was blurry, so his face was difficult to make out. But I quickly realized it wasn’t the man I was hoping to see.

“Sierra.” Ben scooted closer to the side of the bed. “About time, lazy bones.”

The teasing tone immediately made me smile. “I’m not lazy. I got shot.”

“Me too.” He pointed to his right arm, which was bandaged up just like mine. Except his was in a sling. The smile on his face suggested the experience was just a big joke. “We look like twins.”

“Are you okay?” I sat up and looked him over. “You should be in bed too.”

“No, I’m fine.” He leaned back and brushed away my concern. “I’ve been shot before. No big deal.”

“No big deal?” I asked incredulously. When that bullet pierced my skin, I thought it was a big deal.

“Yeah, I get shot all the time. You should see my naked body in all its glory.” He waggled his eyebrows.

If I were closer to him, I would have smacked him. He needed to keep that kind of flirting to a minimum. “But aren’t you dizzy? I’ve never been shot before, but I feel like shit.”

“You’ll toughen up.” He grinned and crossed his ankle over his knee. “I heard you did a great job in there.”

“Well, you heard wrong because I didn’t do anything but lie in a puddle of my own blood and watch my father deeply contemplate whether to let me die or not.” I sighed, trying to bury the hurt so I could move on. “How was the rest of the mission?”

“Great. We got Cameron’s father back and we have the pulse in our possession. Everything is heading back to France as we speak.”

Now that my mind was working at full capacity, I remembered the last encounter with my father. “Where’s Parker?”

“He’s with your father in France.” Ben’s smile dropped when he broached the difficult subject. “You doing okay?” His tone became serious in an unusual way for him. “I’m sure that was difficult.”

“Yeah…it was.” At least my father cared enough about me not to let me die. Parker wouldn’t have killed me, but he didn’t know that. Parker was ruthless and terrifying when he had a mission to accomplish, but he loved me. “Now I’m not sure what’s going to happen.”

“Me neither. He’s in a cell at the base right now.”

“Will Parker turn him over to the authorities?”

“Not immediately.
