Ella continues to improve over the week, and we manage to finish the interviews. She’s almost back to normal and decides to take a long soak in the jet tub while I conference call my two partners to discuss our findings. “When you’re done, we’ll relax and watch a movie.” I kiss her before she leaves the room.

My brother and Josh agree with our decision, and we make plans to arrange severance packages for the employees we’re letting go. When the call finally ends, I look around the dark apartment and realize it’s gotten late. The meeting lasted much longer than I expected. Worry for Ella flows through me, and I rush to the bedroom to check on her. After finding her sound asleep on the bed, I shower and slip under the covers next to her. I pull her into my arms and stare off at the dark ceiling. It will be a long time before I get over her illness and the fear of losing her.
