Four stops west of Shibuya, where the Keio Inokashira Line crosses the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku, is the counter-cultural hub of Shimo-Kitazawa. The word that best describes this shabby but vibrant district is eclectic. Its carefully cultivated collegiate ambience, the assorted bric-a-brac and clothing shops, used record stores and offbeat bookshops, not to mention its lively mix of restaurants and bars, suggest a kind of Ivy League junk shop. The area grew off the back of a black market that existed after World War II and also happens to be packed with tiny live music houses and theatres. Plans to create a major new road means locals fear some of the area’s chaotic charm will be destroyed.
