Chapter 17

Ky couldn’t read Angela’s emotions; they were in constant flux. But if the look on her face could be trusted, she didn’t believe any of it. He moved ahead anyway. He needed to get the truth out there; he’d deal with the repercussions later. No more secrets between them. He wanted to be with her, and he wanted her safe. But damn, things commonplace to him were utterly absurd — lunacy to her. Their realities couldn’t be more different.

“Earth has changed in my time. It would be unrecognizable to you. You would think you had been dropped on an alien planet.

“I trained from a very young age at a place called Aliilota. Geographically, it sits near where Fairplay is now. Our purpose, my purpose here, is to change our history. To stop the destruction. Ren is one of us; he and I traveled here together. Lu and Beth are what we call keepers, so was Lu’s mother. They were born in this time, but they are druid. They guard the portal and help travelers to establish identities and acclimate to this time.

“Gus came here about eighteen years ago. He and Lu are, never mind, that can come later. He helps all of us with whatever he can. He’s a powerful man, but has lost any desire to be a warrior in this battle.

“I thought I was prepared, that I knew what to expect, but the difference can be overwhelming.” Damn it. He was rambling. He sounded like the lunatic she thought he was. She gave him nothing, not a change of expression or a word. Even when he stopped talking, nothing changed. He got the impression she wanted to make sure he was finished before she got up and left.

He took a deep breath, smiled at her, and slowed down. “My earth is a terrible place. Even more so now that I have seen with my own eyes what used to be.

“Nature decimated, completely used up. There are wealthy people that still live in abundance, but they don’t bother with governing or assisting the rest of the population. They have formed what they call the Heritage Path. They purposefully wait, in comfort and abundance, as the rest of the population dies off. They see it as their mission to be around to rebuild the world. Most people live in unimaginable poverty.” Heritage assholes! He stopped, calmed himself, and connected with Angela’s eyes again. “This all sounded better when I was practicing.”

Angela realized he was waiting for her response. She straightened in the chair and glared at him. “Do you think this is a joke? Or maybe you are scary crazy. You don’t seem crazy, but what do I know? What I saw Gus do — it’s the only reason I’m not walking away right now. What’s your game? What’s in this for you?”

Ky sat down in the chair across from her and leaned in toward her. “What do you mean? What didn’t you tell me about last night?”

“Oh, nothing important.
