I was sitting in my office, completely unsure of what to do. It had been a week since Josh came to town, and honestly, I’d expected to have some clue as to what was happening. I’d paid all of our outstanding bills. The harvest had gone well, and all the apples had gone to their respective destinations. Some were to be sold to markets, others were made into cider. We’d made food products and crafts to sell at the Farmer’s Market. Everything was running smoothly.

Under normal circumstances I’d be working on our holiday marketing drive. But, honestly, now that we weren’t the owners, I needed guidance from Josh as to what direction to take.

So, I waited.

Figuring I’d get some coffee and wait for Papa to come back and see if he found anything out when he was down there, I headed into the kitchen.

As I approached the entrance, though, I heard something that made me stop. It sounded like someone talking. Talking and crying. The voice was very low, and it appeared that they were trying not to be overheard.

What I should have done was go back to my office and give the person privacy. But that’s not what I did. I stopped and listened.

“I just can’t believe it, Mary. What am I going to do?”

It was Lisbet, and she was talking to her sister. There was a silence, as Lisbet seemed to be listening to Mary speak. I heard sniffling and more tears.

“I know. We were just hoping that the treatment would be more effective.”

Evidently someone she cared about was sick. Maybe her brother?

“Yeah. I just don’t know what else we can try.” She blew her nose and then said, “Mary, I see Felix coming back from lunch, I need to go. I’ll talk to you later. Love you.”

I waited until I heard the side door open and Felix come in before I entered the kitchen. The two of them started talking about some guest that had a food allergy and I stole a glance at Lisbet. Like Papa, I could see that she was aging. My heart clenched at the thought that someday I would lose them both, like I had my grandmother and my parents.

As I poured my coffee, I reflected on the nature of life. We really only get to have our loved ones for a short period of time. So many of us waste precious time arguing about stupid stuff.

Setting the cup on the counter, I went over to Lisbet and gave her a hug. “I love you, Lisbet. I hope you know that. You’re family to me.”

She looked confused for a moment and then looked at me with red-rimmed eyes. “Well, I love you too, Bella Blue. Not sure what brought that up, but you are definitely the daughter I never had.”

As I grabbed my coffee and headed back to my office, my heart was heavy. I hoped that whoever Lisbet was worried about would be all right.

Because in the end, family is really all that matters.
