Chapter Seventeen: Sunday Dinner
Wade knew she was in trouble before she ever landed back at Lowenfield Regional Airport. She knew she was in trouble as soon as she got the text from Miranda Friday morning. She wasnât really worried about Izzy. Jess would be upset, and sheâd be mad for a while, but sheâd forgive her quick enough. She didnât think that Miranda was going to be so forgiving. She could tell by their quick texts on Saturday night that Miranda was still worried.
Her long and rambling texts were sweet and caring. They did nothing to assuage Wadeâs guilt about leaving her or treating her badly before now. All they did was make her fall for Miranda harder. She just knew that it was a cruel joke, though. There was no way that Miranda was going to give up Luke to be with her. So, she resolved to keep her ink a secret and not let Miranda find out about it. And, if by some miracle, the Fates picked her for Miranda, then she would come clean, but not before.
Her stomach was revolting the closer that she got to her apartment. She knew that she wouldnât have much time before she was expected over at the Hillermansâ for dinner and she didnât know what to expect. She didnât doubt that Izzy would be there, bat in hand, ready for to bash her head in for leaving without telling anyone. But, she had. She knew that Miss Goodlett wouldnât tell anyone about it though.
She knew that she was allowed her birthday off this year because of the inking. When sheâd explained it to Miss Goodlett, the counselor agreed with her on the stipulation that she came straight to her office for second period Monday. Wade would have done that anyway. She needed someone outside the situation to talk to, someone that wasnât invested in her personally, someone who give her advice that was logical and harsh if needed. She knew that Miss Goodlett was the only one who could do that.
She sighed as she pulled into her spot. It was still early enough in the afternoon that she had time to mill around her apartment before heading to the Hillermans. When she didnât see Mirandaâs car, she let out another breath. She grabbed her bag and headed upstairs.
Putting her key in the door, she opened it and went inside. She dropped her bag in her recliner and stopped short. Sleeping on her couch was Miranda. She went to the window and looked out the blinds. No, Mirandaâs car wasnât there. She hadnât been dreaming. She turned back around to look at the brunette on her couch. She looked so peaceful. She couldnât wake her. She couldnât tell her. She wouldnât do that to her.
Miranda must have sensed that she was home. Her eyes fluttered open. Deep teal roamed over Wadeâs slightly taller body like she was trying to make sure that she was real and uninjured. When her body finally caught up with her brain, Miranda was off the couch in a flash and across the room.
