Chapter 11
Iâd been a little concerned about how Jason was planning to carry me. Wouldnât his arms get tired? But then Iâd found out Iâd be harnessed to his back. The others had shifted into their Wolf forms and were dragging the tent bags behind them. Even faster than most humans, Jason couldnât keep up with his pack on two feet, so we lagged behind.
He didnât seem to mind it at all. I kept my dark glasses pressed to my nose as I periodically checked the state of the sun in the sky. Even though it would bring out the Vampires, I preferred nighttime.
Cold hadnât proven to be a problem either. Autumn and Luna had bundled me so much I was actually sweating, even though it was freezing outside. Weâd been silent for the last hour or so, and I was drifting off into sleep when he spoke.
âI think it smells like snow out here.â
I blinked as I looked at the sky, trying to make sense of his words. They were foreign to me. âI donât see any.â
âNo, sorry. I misspoke. What I should have said is I think it smells as though itâs about to snow. Tonight.â
âIs this a Werewolf thing?â
He shook his head, and from my position behind him I could see his blond curls shaking. I reached out and entwined one of the messy strands in my finger.
âOuch, Rachel, that hurts,â he whined, and I let go of his hair. It was too bad; I really liked playing with it, and from my position behind him, had been safe to do so. He couldnât exactly reach me unless he unhooked me.
âSeriously, smell the air. Iâve heard humans say they can smell a snowstorm, too.â
I took a deep breath. He was right. There was something different about being outside right now. The air tasted altered. It was more frigid, as though I could feel the snow forming around me, even though it wasnât there yet.
âWhat will we do for shelter tonight?â
The pack was likely hours ahead of us. Weâd never catch them before the snow.
âIâll shift and keep you warm.â
âI donât think you can keep the snow off me. Not even with all your fur, Wolf-boy.â
âI could if you let me shift and lie on top you.â
âAhâ¦no. Nothing about you pushing your wolf on top of me sounds comfortable for either of us. Whatâs option two?â
He stopped moving. âWhat makes you think thereâs an option two? Option one might be it.â
I hadnât considered being out of options. In the brief time Iâd known Jason, his mind always seemed to be seeking out multiple angles and lots of options. I had assumed there was an option two. I really didnât like the idea of option one. In fact, it made me feel a little bit creeped out. Would I have to spend the whole night under the Wolf?
âIâm joking with you. I can smell your anxiety.â
I put my head on his shoulder. In this case, it was a good thing he could scent what I felt.
