Chapter Twelve

Over the next few days, tensions rise in the streets. Security doesn’t pick up on anything solid, apart from a few alarming rumors—All Saints are looking for revenge after the failed attack, and they are preparing a large shipment for Europe with a street value of over 200 million dollars. For now, I presume that All Saints mean to send the goods out without us having our cut. Logan’s still in the process of negotiating with them, and that’s all I know. Then again, having no feedback from that arrogant prick doesn’t mean too much. Guy thinks he owns the city. And maybe he does, a little. Since Mia hasn’t updated me on anything, I haven’t changed Owen’s orders—all members of the family are shadowed at all times, and festivities are kept as close to home as possible, D.’s working by my side. Ro hasn’t asked me for any explanation yet about my questionable decision to save Phoenix from All Saints, which is a temporary relief. Knowing him, he’ll somehow find the right moment to interrogate me.

It is nice and sunny when I head for Shaolin’s Martial Arts Center. Sunglasses pushed up to hold back my quiff, my red Porsche newly washed, I’m fresh as fuck. I might never admit it out loud, but I enjoy coming here. There’s really something peaceful about the place. It’s like time goes slower here, and that’s not just because of that gorgeous inner court that Charlie maintains, nor the gentle, traditional Japanese music that lingers throughout the mutual spaces. Perhaps it’s got to do with the intensity of the sport, the pure concentration and control of the body when doing judo, which is what I’m planning on doing. Just to let off some steam before tonight’s party. Samuel and I are not friends. But we will be brothers. And frankly, he’s someone I trust. We have that loyalty in common, and it’s that fierceness that links us. Add our mutual love of sports, and we actually get on pretty well during work-outs—when he’s not being a dick and throwing me to the floor, which happens about eighty percent of the time. But, I’m still learning, and I got to give it to him, he’s the best teacher I could wish for. Again, he doesn’t have to know that.

The school’s already closed to the public when I make my way in, but both lovebirds can usually be found here. Charlie is closing the door to his garden when I round the corner and approach the large reception. I’m about to greet him when I see that he’s not alone. He’s with Ezra, his long-term friend, who joined the Frères Perdus. He’s lounging on one of the comfortable sofas, legs crossed at the knee, a beer in his hand. I know that Mia mentioned that some of the wackos had come with Gabriel to the States, but with Ezra sitting here, that reality is being slammed in my face. And I’m not liking it one, tiny bit.
