Things to Consider When Implementing a Portal

Implementing portals will require the commitment of resources and senior management support to be successful. The healthcare organization must have a clear and consistent vision of what it wants to accomplish with the portal. Project management will be critical and will require strong planning. Do not rely on vendors to supply this skill set. It will require the involvement of stakeholders, including administration, physicians, nursing, HR, and IT personnel.

Pilot the portal internally before deployment. This should include stress testing and vulnerability penetration testing to insure security. Do not push the product to service if problems are encountered in testing. Premature deployment can damage the project if the community cannot access the site or perceives it to be substandard. Early deployment without sufficient testing may open security vulnerabilities.

Finally, make sure your patient, physician, and employee enrollment processes are well documented, tested, and convenient. Users and patients will be reluctant to participate if they perceive the sign-up process to be difficult.
