Project management skills

An organisation that is being subjected to a wide ranging audit is likely to require a significant amount of work to be done over a period of time. This must be organised effectively to make best use of people’s time.

While a junior or inexperienced auditor may not be involved in managing an audit project themselves, gaining experience of one is going to be essential, especially in larger organisations. The ability to manage projects, of any sort, is generally a combination of learning and practical application, i.e. a skill. There are theoretical elements that can be learnt; for example, classes on management. This may involve learning to prioritise and how to monitor and encourage the progress of a project. However, there is much that can be learnt through being involved in projects, whether as a leader or not. Setting targets that are achievable while still fulfilling the requirement of the project is key. The motivation of participants is also critical to getting the sort of rapport that allows the leader to have awareness of issues that may slow progress early, so they can be addressed. It is easy for audits, or audit preparation to get lost in the business of everyday work, a good auditor will keep the momentum going.
