“YOU’RE TELLING ME you can hear this thing?” Rosalia asked as the scull slowed. She glanced toward Grant, who was inspecting the silent engine.

“The man’s had a lot of people tromp through his brainwaves,” Grant said distractedly as he checked the fuel. A grimace told Rosalia all she needed to know about the loss of fuel caused by their sudden need to reach escape velocity.

“That’s the best way to explain it,” Kane agreed. “How bad?”

“We’re rowing the rest of the way,” Grant responded. “If we’re going to have at least thirty seconds’ worth of run-like-hell, we’re rowing.”

“At least no one shot up our fuel tank,” Rosalia replied.

“Well, let’s not tempt fate and call down gun-toting alligators on our asses,” Grant said. He looked at Kane. “You okay?”

“It was a sharp flash, but I’ve only got background static left over,” Kane answered. “Someone is playing with fire with those octopus-looking things.”

“We could always call our friends over at Mount Olympus. They eat that kind of shit over there,” Grant said, remembering one of the repasts he’d had in the hall of the Clockwork Warrior pilots.

“It’s rubbery, not bad,” Kane replied. “But I don’t think we have the time to spare, or a way to transport them all. The gear skeletons are just too big for mat-trans chambers.”
