CHAPTER FIVE
18 Nemali, 6959 R.T.
As dawn rose, Amelhir knew that his death was at hand. He hardly slept the previous night, as he struggled to consider what effect his life had on the world. Did he matter? Was his life just another chain-link in history that would ultimately be forgotten? What provoked them to make an example of him when so many people held far darker secrets?
It seems like a play that makes our rulers into one half fools and the other half hypocrites.
Although he had been able to calm his mind with that explanation, the desire for antagonism flared once more as seven Avelingian guards entered his prison. These sons of Nuavel carried a set of chains that represented the doom of his earthly life, but Amelhir would be damned if they took him without a fight. As they opened his cell door, Amelhir waited until half of them were in the room before launching his assault.
WHAM! Amelhir opened by throwing the lead guard against the prison bars, strangling the Imperial servant as hard as he could manage. Although he had managed to throttle one of his adversaries, he loosened his grasp as he realized that the other six were on the attack. He managed to avoid the butt of a musket as it came at his stomach, swiftly punching the offending elf in the face. Unfortunately for him, he could continue no longer, for a guard at his back produced a baton and swung hard.
WHACK! Amelhir and his entire world went black.

When he awoke, Amelhir realized that he was being dragged through the streets of Nuavel in chains. While he attempted to continue his struggle, his grogginess and the injuries across his body had gotten the better of him. He barely had the strength to maintain his balance and remain aware of his surroundings, but he soon discovered that his brief offense had split open the lip of the elf who stood next to him.
Good, he smiled. The son of a bitch deserved a licking for being the kind of pond scum that he is.
âOh, would you look at that,â one of the guards behind him said. âThe pervert has woken up from his nap.â
âIt is about time, too,â Split Lip said. âWe are going to enjoy seeing you squirm as you meet your end, you cur.â
Amelhir grunted. The guards thought that it was a response to their taunts. However, they had not realized that his seemingly animalistic behavior was in reaction to a sight unseen to their eyes. A green cloak was tracking them, tracing their steps across the cobblestone and into the city square.

It looked as if the city of Nuavel was on the brink of collapse. Loyalist citizens were the first to crowd into the area, hoping to witness the might of the monarchy in which they had entrusted their spirits. Soon, they were overtaken by the shouts of the pro-republican faction that had been growing in strength over the past five years.
