âWeâve got to get out of here,â I told Sasha, grabbing her arm. âWe need to get to Ambrose and Christian.â
She looked at me skeptically. âHear all those furballs between us and Nightstone proper? I donât think weâre going anywhere until theyâve finished pissing on hydrants or whatever theyâre doing. The boss wants you safe.â
âTheyâre going to find us,â I said.
âI donât think so,â she promised. âThereâs no reason theyâd come this way. The place only gets more⦠condemned...the further on you go.â
âWhat are you on about, Nas?â Bane demanded. âWhy are you following me?â
He stared at me from too close; I could smell the intoxicating scent of his body and feel his heat radiating off his muscular form, but that wasnât enough to distract me from what a dickhead he was. For once. I shouldâve realized he was a dickhead on day one, and then I wouldnât be in prison.
âOh, get over yourself, Bane. I was trying to protect your ungrateful ass, but I think I know who killed Jonah, and right now, I would like to prevent him from killing anyone else. Iâm ninety-percent-sure Ambrose and Christian are torturing an innocent man and possibly his lover, so Iâd like to stop that too, if youâd be so kind as to get out of my way.â
I gave Bane a shove backward--although putting my hands on that hard, muscular, heated body was a mistake because just touching him activated a throb within me--and headed toward the sound of the wolves, determined to find a way to skirt them. Ambrose and Christian needed to know what I knew, before the situation grew any more dire. And Iâd like to give Ambrose a heads-up about what was happening in his pack.
Bane raised his hands to his shoulders. âSo sorry I dared to question you for skulking behind me. Stalker.â
âWould you two keep it down,â Sasha hissed at Bane.
He gave her a brief once-over and an unimpressed look that I personally would never give a fierce female vampire. âWho are you?â
âMy nameâs Sasha. And Iâve been following you around for the last few days not murdering you even though believe me, I can see why itâs very tempting for so many people, so you can watch the dismissive tone with me. I think a little gratitude might even be in order.â
He stared at her, processing that information, then nodded. âNice to meet you, Sasha. Why are you bodyguarding me?â
âChristianâs orders.â
âAnd he acted like he didnât love me anymore,â Bane muttered. Then he hissed across the expanse, âNasima! Wait!â
He turned to Sasha. âYou should get her back to Christian. Iâm sure you can get around them without attracting attention--youâre so fast.â
She shook her head. âTheyâll scent us. I canât guarantee I can move faster, especially if they shift.â
Howls split the air, too close for comfort, and she winced.
âItâs all right, Sasha,â I began.
She tilted her head. âNo, Iâm not sure itâs going to be. I can hear some of them coming closer. We need to hide you, Nasima.
